So I’m working on Afro Cuban beats with a student today. I wrote up a couple of version of what I usually play when faced with this dilemma, so I thought I’d post it for the masses. Leave a comment if it helps. Feel free to use it with your students or ask me questions. Clink on the link to download the pdf. 12 8 Afro Cuban
Had a great first rehearsal with the new winter percussion program at Santa Teresa High School tonight. I was way stoked that we had 5 middle school kids from Bernal and Herman show up. Very cool! Things went really well. I am excited that we are able to offer them this program. It is going to help them so much when they come to march at the high school level next year. We aren’t going to do competitions this year. Which is really nice, because it……

So I just realized a new student of mine can’t really read music. We’ve had a few lessons and I knew his reading needed help, but I didn’t know how bad it was. So we are starting over from scratch and I made some reading exercise sheets for this student. I thought I would share them in case any of my band director friends or other teachers might want to use them. I hope they help. I suggest having your students write out the counts for……
I had an awesome experience last night with our 1980′s concert at Santa Teresa High School. We did a percussion ensemble arrangement of Separate Ways by Journey. And the musical theater kids did an outstanding job with Footloose and a great duet from the musical, Chess. All the groups were totally rad! We were all in costume and it was just a lot of fun. The guitar ensemble’s version of Beat It was really great. Plus we raised over $800 for the program. A totally successful……
It is interesting that most “arrangements” I found of this online actually had the rhythms completely wrong. We are going to work on this at Saint Francis. Should be great for football games. Let me know what you think. It works really well because there are built in repeats. With repeats – 1 minute. Without repeats – 30 seconds. Perfect for in the stands when sometimes you need shorter or longer cadences. Party Rock Anthem – tenors Party Rock Anthem – snare Party Rock Anthem……

I am really excited about working with Saint Francis. The kids are great and it is a really fun experience. This is a video of the drumline playing their new percussion feature that I wrote for them. Let me know what you think. I am really proud of it and them.

I am excited to start teaching musical theatre again today. This time for Santa Teresa high school. They are doing Seussical The Musical in March. Lots of basic breathing and singing technique for the first few weeks. I wish I could do more shows in San Jose, but what I’ve been offered is ridiculous. Who offers a professional musician $15 a show? So wish me luck with all of my la-la-la’s today. Also, if anyone wants to go in March, let me know. Or if anyone……
